Got this for my mom. she is technology challenged and stuck in old habits when it comes to TV viewing. She, like most people, is paying an egregious cable bill and wanted to cut her costs. I knew it would be unlikely that if I got her a component Roku, or Chromecast, or FireTV, she would simply not use it because it would be one more thing to turn on and she’s just so used to clicking on the TV and flipping to her usual channels. This reason alone is what made the built in Roku so appealing for this TV. The fact that it’s on when she turns the TV on makes all the difference. I set her up with PBS, HGTV, Netflix, Hulu, Pandora and a few others. Welcome to the future, mom.Not much to review as far as Roku, it’s the best streaming device on the market. This is the same, built it. The processor is super fast on this TV as well. Everything loads up almost instantly. Most things are only limited by speed of your internet.Build quality isn’t exactly amazing, but it’ll get the job done. Picture quality is great. Widescreen is really nice because all the streaming channels handle it nicely, unlike Cable. Can’t speak to durability or lifespan of the TV, but at this price, if it lasts 5 years, it’s totally worth it.Also, the remote is great. So simple. My mom figured out how to use it in a couple minutes. She’s ready to cut the cord now too!

I debated for quite awhile on which tv I wanted to get. I know I needed a 32 inch for now and I wanted a smart tv, because where I have it for now, I have no cable or satellite. I wanted something I could possibly get local channels and be able to stream my Netflix, Amazon Prime, and YouTube on at least and saw can also stream IHeart radio. Then, a number of other apps also that I haven’t tried and will at least try the free ones. This is my first flatscreen tv, so also first experience with a smart tv and I am absolutely loving it. Had to attach the legs and such, but setting it up was all pretty simple. Although, to set Roku up, it did ask me to use my phone, tablet, or computer, so if someone doesn’t have these, I am guessing they can’t use any of the Roku apps? That would be a negative for some people maybe, but I have all 3 so it wasn’t an issue for me. I set it up on my phone and everything went smoothly. Once it sets up, it gives you a little tutorial on how to use the remote and navigate the menu on the tv to get to what you want. This is a plus for anyone not familiar with it like me. It’s a little weird having the volume and mute on the side of the remote, but I actually kind of like it. Means I know exactly where it is, even in the dark. No number keys isn’t an issue to me right now when I am mainly streaming videos and music rather than watching cable or satellite tv, but when I do use it for that, I am sure I will have a universal remote that comes with the services to program, so still shouldn’t be an issue. I absolutely love the picture quality and the sound gets very loud so no problem with being able to hear it.The other television I considered in the end was a comparative Vizio model, but didn’t look like it came with Amazon Prime app and I don’t remember what it was, but there were a couple other issues that concerned me that it lacked over this tv. Plus, the price of this one was much better. In the end, I am very satisfied. No problems out of the box, but if something happens before long, will edit this. However, I did purchase a 5yr warranty with it that includes free shipping both ways in the event anything happens. If things continue to go well, I plan to buy another in a couple months, as well as a 55″ model by TCL. I wanted to see how well I liked it before I invested so much into them.

Could not be more impressed by TCL for their service. My TV did come damaged, but it was the easiest process to get it replaced for a new one. My only complaint is having to wait a couple weeks, but it was still much sooner than the original expected date. Someone came to pick up the old one and they emailed me a confirmation that it would be delivered once they actually knew the specific day it would be delivered so that I could make arrangements so that the tv wasn’t sitting there all day on my patio. The packaging isn’t discreet in that it’s the actual TV box, so I would worry a little about timing it right to be delivered when you are there. So now onto the TV itself, it’s VERY lightweight and easy to set up. The whole thing took me like 15 minutes from out of the box, to watching something. The volume is really good for a TV like this also. No dead pixels and good quality picture. It’s very easy to use and set up with consoles and internet. Very simple. I love this tv and do plan to buy a couple more for other rooms. You will not regret this purchase!

I purchased this TV last year for the living room. Having added a Roku 2 to our Samsung TV in the family room, it was time to add Roku to the living room for everyone to use. I wanted to really keep things simple once I was shined onto Roku TV’s, and after spending hours researching settled on TCL.I am so happy I purchased this TV, it has been issue-free, and works excellent with wireless network connectivity to my Plex server, Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts, streaming movies, music, etc. is all very easy. The Roku interface for TV, BluRay players and extra devices works well. The built-in HD tuner gets the job done quite nicely for those OTA channels, we got rid of cable years ago. This TV further solidifies that as a good decision. Many complained about the picture, and frankly I didn’t have many issues. I researched suggested settings, and found that I was able to easily reduce overall brightness and backlighting more than these guides suggested which really helped the darker blacks and transitions to blacks without becoming too dark. I did this when we first setup the TV and haven’t touched it since. Overall I feel for the price and technology offered, the picture quality fits with the price tag and is very good. The options are more simple in menus than many other TV’s, but the effectiveness of the Roku built-in far surpasses all other Smart TV experiences I’ve ever had. Period. I usually avoid Smart TV’s and get the basic versions and add a Roku 2,3 or new Roku Stick (the quad core one is faster than a Roku 2).Frankly thus budget-oriented TV has been a pleasure to own and use, my wife and kids have many hours with it as do I. It has been a painless experience as the TV offers exactly what we need. I did only purchase the 40″ version, and frankly in our smaller living room it fits perfectly. Performance is great, I also appreciate the fast power-on right after turning off…there’s been a few oops situations where that feature is really really nice. The remote is very similiar to other Roku TV’s and devices, and has not only held up but still works very well, was even chewed on by the family pet and still works flawlessly so I cannot justify replacing it. But even replacement remotes aren’t all that expensive either.Very rarely do I notice any UI lagginess, but on rare occasion I do. I will add that from what I researched the built-in device is comparable to a Roku 2, but just below it in performance. Really, a non-issue. Plex is a great test and it does that smoothly 99% of the time. Not needing to do a dedicated Ethernet run was nice too…after the massive disappointment my PlayStation 3 showed me with Plex I expected worse from Roku2 and TV…both consume less power and run smoother than the PS3 for streaming video and are able to do it wirelessly where the PS3 could do 720P, but not 1080P…at least consistently. The TV is lightweight and easy to assemble and setup, easy to use, move, clean. You really can’t go wrong and the price is quite nice. I am not worried about 4K so this worked perfectly for my family and I, I hope it does for you as well!

Can’t beat this baby for the price. I hung it myself in my spare garage/man cave/spare office so I could watch TV where there was no cable connection. For the record I used the following parts for a clean install: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014MBZ6GA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NKZ5R28/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Using the Time Warner Cable app, I essentially have the same TVs I have inside the house that are hardwired, with no extra box rental fees. The built-in Roku works well, and I can’t speak to any wifi difficulties. I have a Ubiquiti wifi network are our place, and even though I put a wireless Unifi AP (repeater) in the same room, the TV had no issues picking up and using the signal via 2.4GHz from an AP at the other side of the house. I’m happy with my purchase. You will need to adjust your color/brightness settings to your liking, but once that’s done you’ll really like it!

I’m really impressed by this TV, especially at this price. Mine was delivered in a cardboard box with styrofoam protecting the TV itself. Everything was intact (I like that it even has batteries for the remote). Directions are included, and setup is easy. You create a free Roku account and can use your computer to browse and sign up for channels you like (including everything from popular channels such as Netflix and HULU to specific stuff like a Ted-talk channel or ones featuring certain genres of music). *Note: some channels require a separate monthly subscription: examples include Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now, etc. There are lots of free channels too!* The TV syncs automatically (you can also browse for channels on the TV). You can set a code that is required for ANY purchases, to prevent kids or anybody else from buying movies/channels/etc without your permission. It remembers which ports are connected to what device, which is cool. For example, instead of “HDMI 1” the box says “DVD”. Navigation is easy, especially with the shortcut buttons on the remote (I do wish it let you personalize these, since I don’t use Rdio or Vudu, and only occasionally Amazon, so the only one that is useful to me is the Netflix button). The remote also gets rid of numbers. Instead you scroll quickly through a list of cable/antennae channels that pops up on the left side. You can still use the “back” button if you want to bounce back and forth between two channels. The remote is easy to figure out and use to adjust audio/visual settings, etc. The * button will let you access basic settings at any time. Now, to the functioning of the TV itself. It works quickly and connects easily to all my devices/services. The screen quality is great! Vivid, clear colors. I did notice that when I had the image setting on “normal” sometimes scenes appeared almost “computer animated” when they weren’t. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it’s something to do with color saturation and movement of characters. Not sure if this is a sign of good quality or an issue with the resolution or refresh rate. Either way, I don’t notice it after changing it to “movie” mode, and it didn’t really bother me in the first place. Just something to note.Overall I am greatly enjoying this TV! It is my first flat screen and I’m totally content with it. It does everything I want it to (connect to cable, HDMIs and wi-fi for TV, Netflix, Youtube, music channels, movies, etc). I would definitely recommend a Roku TV to anybody.UPDATE: 10 months on and the TV is still great. It is a little bit slower to boot up and load programs than when I first got it, but otherwise I still think it’s an excellent bargain.

Update 4/25/2016After having this TV for a little while I can say this is a fantastic little set and deserves 5 stars. I have yet to get my ethernet connection to work using the belkin dongle but since I am using it in conjunction with a powerline ethernet adapter there could be other issues. No matter, it streams fine for normal use, and it will buffer a little on bigger files but only once did I have to just shut it off because the buffering was annoying. Again, this may be an issue on my network/media center side and not the TV.Overall, I am considering a second one of these for the playroom/guest bedroom.I haven’t had a TV in my bedroom in over 10 years. After having kids, I simply lost all time to watch TV and if I had time, they were watching instead. As a one TV household, this has worked fairly well. But now I think I’d like to have the ablility to sneak away and watch in the comfort of my own room. Being a family who owns and loves our Roku 3, I had intended on buying a nice little flat screen and a new Roku to go along with it. So seeing that there were TV’s with the Roku platform already incorporated was like an omen that I need to investigate the line further. The low price always makes me hesitant when buying electronics. Now, this is obviously dependent on the appliance but in general, but cutting corners to cut price = poor construction and angry consumers in my experience. That said, I picked up the 32″ TCL after the Best Buy insignia version of the Roku TV suddenly jumped $40 in price. Here are the important things to remember as I see itThere is no ethernet connection on this TV, only wifi. So if you plan to stream movies (or Roku) it will have to be over your wifi network. This may or may not be an issue depending on your setup, but I generally prefer wired connections when streaming. A solution to this is to purchase an USB to ethernet dongle as there is a USB plug.–The Roku remote doesn’t have the earphone feature like the Roku 3 remote so no watching TV using just headphones plugged into the remote–The picture tends towards the dark side and there is no option to fine-tune. You can select different display categories (light, dark, darker, etc) but you can’t tweak the picture levels like in more expensive TV’s.–The speakers are totally acceptable for a bedroom although they are at the back of the TV–if mounted on a wall it might muffle them further–The TV is very light, easy to set up and overall the picture looks very nice. Is it a top of the line LG picture, no. But its clear and crisp and looks good to me so far. The 720p vs the 1080p is really a non-issue on a 32 inch TV. You probably won’t even notice.–All and all, with the roku built in and the general build quality, this is a fantastic deal for a second TV–kids room, game room or the like.

I was really wanting my next TV to be a smart TV, and to find one for less than $200 was a surprise to me. I have been really impressed with this little TV. It does have drawbacks – the sound quality is pretty bad once you get over 50% volume. The overall volume is rather quiet. If you are using the roku app you can’t turn the TV on if it has been over 10 minutes and the TV is in standby mode. But it has a lot of perks! It has all the Roku channels. We have two other roku’s so we are familiar with Roku and the roku apps on our phones. The app for the TCL also has a power button and a volume button. The app for our box and streaming stick do not have these (and do not control the TV) so we really like the new feature. The physical remote that comes with the TV looks like a regular roku remote. The volume buttons are on the side, so I have several times accidentally turned the volume up or down or muted the TV when holding the remote. I also sometimes hit the power button when I meant to use the home button. I do think the remote design could be a lot better, but it seems like they were really trying to keep the classic Roku remote design. The remote also use IR so it needs direct line of sight. We put the TV in our living room and if you are in the kitchen area (its an open floor plan) you are too far to use the remote. We have to switch to the app. But, the app works well so its not terrible.

This review is for the TCL 40FS3800 Television I have seen reviews of this TV that claim other televisions in this class may have a better picture, but if that is true, I would really like to see it! I find the picture to be excellent. In my experience the Roku Operating System is easy and intuitive for most people, and when I configured it to access the Internet through my wireless network, the TV quickly updated itself to the latest Roku version, currently 7.2.0, build 4143-08. This Roku version supports PlayStation Vue. Roku’s streaming channel possibilities dwarf the proprietary offerings of most brands of Smart televisions. In addition to the thousands of possible streaming channels (which require an Internet connection) it is possible to configure which inputs appear on the home screen with the user’s chosen channels. The names of the inputs can be customized by choosing from a fairly extensive list of devices which you might attach to the TV (you cannot however manually type in a name.) You can also customize the power-on behavior to have the TV automatically switch to a particular input when you turn it on. TCL appears to make access to the latest Roku OS version available promptly, an important factor in your purchase decision, and one which I’ve heard may be a problem with some of the other brands of Roku televisions. For the connections, a downward facing panel contains a power cable jack, three HDMI inputs, a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, and a coaxial antenna jack. On the left side, a side-facing panel contains a reset button, a USB jack, composite video and analog stereo audio input jacks, and an optical S/PDIF audio output jack. This TV comes with dual band wireless networking and easily connected to my A/C wireless router. There is no Ethernet jack, however this TV is able to attach to wired Ethernet with specific USB dongle type adapters.Adapters which worked for me are:Ugreen USB 2.0 to 10/100 Fast Ethernet Lan Wired Network Adapterhttps://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Network-Adapter-Macbook-Chromebook/dp/B00MYT481CAndPlugable USB 2.0 to 10/100 Fast Ethernet LAN Wired Network Adapterhttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00484IEJSAdapters that did NOT work for me are:Ableconn USB2E100B USB to 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapterhttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005UFO1FAAndj5create JUE130 USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapterhttps://www.amazon.com/Gigabit-Ethernet-Adapter-Interface-JUE130/dp/B00CRMZFI6Even though the USB jack on the TV is blue (which is commonly used for USB 3.0), I believe that people have only been successful in getting USB 2.0 adapters to work properly. Since you cannot load drivers into the TV, you need an adapter that has drivers already included in the Linux kernel that is used for the Roku Operating System. If you are planning on using this TV as a display for a computer, bear in mind that the resolution is 1920 x 1080. If you sit close (3-4 feet) to a 40 inch TV at 1080p, you will notice some color ghosting on thin lines and small text on white backgrounds. Computer videos however look fine. In conclusion, I would not hesitate to recommend this television to anyone looking for an inexpensive, easy to operate Smart TV.

TV seems great. Good picture. My biggest issue is the wall mount sold by Amazon with this TV does not fit it.This TV has an unusual VESA 100×150 pattern. I looked at a ton of points- and that is very rare. For static (tilt only) mounts, pick one with slots (not holes) on the TV plate- the mounting screws can slide up and the slots to fit this pattern. This type of mount is not uncommon. For moving, articulating mounts (the kind with an arm that folds out to move the TV) make sure to confirm they fit 100×150 VESA. These plates have holes, and you can’t adjust them if they don’t fit. One that does is Sanus FLF118. I found it at Wal-mart.Anyway, TV has a great picture.
