We were in need of a portable Bluetooth speaker for our poolside music, and trips to the beach (and other outings). While size and weight were both somewhat important, there was no requirement for it to fit into a cup holder or anything like that.I have been a live sound audiophile for decades and I have my own high end PA, play in a band, and do DJ’ing for select family and friends as a hobby with my equipment. I mention this just to let you know that I know good sound when I hear it.Ergonomics: The unit can be easily carried in one hand and it is very light. The unit sits firm when you set it down. The controls are both easy to use and obvious to find.Sound quality: This thing can fill a private pool area with music EASILY. The bass response indoors seems a bit much when you turn it up a little (seems OK at lower volume inside); but outside, it is EXACTLY what the doctor ordered. Outside, the Charge 5 sounds full, warm, and articulate. You can easily hear the various instruments in the mix. Personally, I wouldn’t use a bluetooth speaker indoors …. or if I did, I would opt for one that was made for that specific purpose (higher quality codec, more balanced eq, etc). It is clear that the Charge 5 was made for going outside (IP67 rating, super long battery life, etc). It isn’t a bad speaker for indoor listening (especially if you aren’t an audiophile as I am and just want something to listen to while you do dishes/laundry/etc, etc). Listening indoors, I was pleased enough (although my PA has nothing to worry about ;). One would certainly hope that a 10K front of house PA would sound better than a $180 bluetooth speaker). With respect to output volume, this little speaker can get quite loud. Unless I was hosting a huge party (where I would use my real PA anyway), this speaker has more than enough output for anyone. To sum up the sound quality, it is very good indeed.Bluetooth connectivity: Simple and easy to connect to. I had no issues. The speaker appears to have a greater range than my house area! My wife left in her car, and even in her car, it continued to play until she got out of the driveway. Pretty impressive. More than enough range to cover an outdoor area, or an entire floor in your house (maybe even 2 floors ….. but why wouldn’t you just carry it upstairs with you?).Features: Ok, one minor quibble that I have eluded to. The unit doesn’t have an adjustable EQ as of the current firmware. I am really hoping that JBL gets on the ball and corrects this. This would be particularly useful for trimming the bass at higher volumes inside where the bass is a bit too much with the standard eq it comes with. Of course, most people will not play it that loud indoors, and some will love the emphasized bass response exactly as it is (perhaps not the audio purist :)). The rest of the features are very good and well thought out.For $180.00 USD, this speaker is as good as it gets.

I previously own the Charge 3 but started getting battery issues so decided to upgrade. Saw a lot of videos saying sound is similar to previous generations I totally disagree this charge 5 is an amazing speaker and the bass is ridiculous for the size. I can fill my entire house with music just from this speaker, believe me this one JBL got right.

This speaker sounds amazing by itself. I liked it so much that I bought a second one shortly after so that I could use the partyboost feature, and it is a whole new experience! I personally like the way stereo mode (configured in the app) sounds better than the regular partyboost, because the partyboost sounds like the speakers are trying to compete with each other, but when they are in stereo they have a more cleaner sound. But from what I heard, when a third speaker gets involved then it can only be in partyboost, which is fine. But don’t get me wrong partyboost sounds great, works great, but I just think that using them in stereo sounds better.My picture doesn’t really do the looks of the speakers much justice (I know) but these have a beautiful bright red color to them in person, especially outside in the sunlight. I’m actually glad I got them in red instead of black which is what I was originally going to do, but I’m so glad I got them in red it gives the speaker a little bit more of a fun factor (Plus I can find them easier)I know that some people were complaining about audio distortion once you get above like 60 or 70ish percent, but I can’t really see why you would need it that loud anyway lol because these things are loud even without partyboost just one can be heard just fine 50% and under. Now, if you get two (or more) of these bad boys you can get it louder without distorting because it will sound louder at the lower volumes without putting stress on the individual speakers.

As a speaker enthusiast I’ve owned many different brands of speakers. Harmon Kardon (owns JBL) has always been my favorite brand. I wanted to buy a speaker that I can take on trips and not worry about the battery dying on long days out. The price of the speaker for its category is defiantly on the higher side. You are paying for the quality, it looks and sounds high quality. The addition of a tweeter and the new sleek design, It’s a completely different beast from the previous generations. If you want something light and easily portable that doesn’t compromise its sound than the Charge 5 is the way to go.

Upgraded from the charge 3 just because I’m a filthy consumerist who likes the newest toys and I can say there is definitely an improvement in sound quality! JBL continues to be my go-to for portable speakers and almost all of my friends own jbl products as well. They’re built to last and sound great. If you’re not a huge audiophile, you’ve probably better off buying a charge 3 or charge 4 to save money but I will say I can notice the difference in sound quality.

Just got my Charge 5 and out of the box it’s amazing. So far it’s met every expectation.Prior to buying I watched many review videos and decided on the Charge 5 to meet my needs. The flip would’ve worked but the battery size and ability to charge other devices multiple times aided in the decision to go with this model.

Been using the Charge 5 for a little over 2 weeks now, and I gotta say I’m impressed. It’s super easy to sync to my pixel 4a or my laptop, and it can get incredibly loud. I’ve been using it while I work on doing a reno of our basement, and my wife complains because she can hear it upstairs. So I know I need to soundproof our basement! So far I’ve listened to it about 5 hours a day for 3 or 4 days, and then charged it, so I haven’t drained it completely, but the battery life seems to be really good.Sound quality is excellent. You can either turn up the volume on your phone, or use the volume buttons on the Charge 5 itself.The Charge 5 being one hundred seventy five dollars when I bought it might seem a bit expensive for a small Bluetooth speaker, it packs a lot of quality, and it’s very well built, and I feel I got my money’s worth.
