I have always been a fan of Sony gear but mostly their photography & videography. I have been a bit disappointed with most of their audio gear. I took a chance on this speaker because of some of the reviews I had read online. So happy I did!Lets get right to it. Sound quality is amazing! The highs are crisp and tight. The mid tones did not sound muddy in the least. The bass…oh man, the bass. It’s window rattling bass. More bass that a speaker of this size should have. The mega bass button really takes it to another level. However it can be a bit too much. Those low tones with Mega Bass activated can almost over lower your mids and highs. So for most music I leave the Mega Bass turned off. But if I am listening to something like hip hop then the Mega Bass can really enhance the music. The build quality is outstanding as you would expect a piece of Sony gear at this price point. You can feel it when picking this thing up and feeling how heavy it is. It feels like a high quality plastic with a gray cloth cover. It’s IP66 rated when can handle some water but definitely don’t submerge under water. You have battery life that will last you all day. I love the quick charge features of this speaker. If the battery dies on you, you can plug it in with the included power adapter for about 10 minutes and you will get 3 hours of playtime. They mention this in the advertising but I just wanted to reiterate this is in fact true in real world experience.Just about every type of connection type is here. You have a USB audio input, mini jack audio in, a 3/4 mic/instrument in port that has it’s own gain level knob. Of course you have rock solid Bluetooth connectivity as well. You also have RGB lighting at the ends around the drivers. When you use the Sony mobile app you can change the colors to several different modes. Just an all around attractive appearance to this speaker. If you are hesitant about the price on this speaker I would say you absolutely get what you are paying for. Everything from the included features, build quality and sound quality all are perfectly in line with what you are paying for this speaker.

I really like this speaker. It packs a huge punch for such a small package. This is a high quality speaker system that is designed for indoor or outdoor use, and it is made to weather the elements. With the out-of-the-box audio settings, the output is fantastic, and the bass is quite pronounced. Using the Sony Music Center app, adjustments to the speaker’s audio can be made to further enhance the audio quality. At its maximum volume, the output remains clear and undistorted. While very loud, the maximum volume is not so loud as to be painful, as some speakers can be.The device comes with the speaker, a quick-charger and cord, and a manual. The manual is a quick-start manual; the complete manual is available on Sony’s website. There is a large handle on the top which makes it easy to carry, and feet on the bottom that keep this round speaker positioned. There is a light ring on each end that lights up with the music. The speaker is fairly compact, measuring approximately 18” wide, 10” tall, and 8.5” deep. Its weight is only 12.34 pounds. On top of the speaker are buttons that control power, Bluetooth input, volume, playback, and bass. The playback button is used to control various features including pausing playback and skipping to the next track. The bass button activates the Mega Bass feature which amplifies the speaker’s bass.Behind a watertight cap on the back of the speaker are input connections and additional control buttons. Here is where you would plug in the power cord as well as a microphone, guitar, or other audio input device. There are two USB outlets that can provide a charge to mobile devices or can be used as an input for an audio device. The buttons are used to connect other audio devices, turn on/off the lights, announce the battery charge level, select a guitar as an input, and adjust the microphone or guitar volume. The speaker can be used while charging. While I have not tested the battery life, the manufacturer says a 30 hour life can be expected at an average listening volume and with the lights off. Operating at a high volume, and/or running with the lights on, will decrease the battery life. The recharge time is up to 3 hours, which is a fairly quick charge; additionally, the manufacturer states that with a 10 minute charge, the speaker can run for 3 hours. The speaker works either by receiving a broadcast from a Bluetooth connected device, or by using one of the hardwired input connections. There are no WiFi capabilities. The Bluetooth device must remain within 98 feet of the speaker for a signal to be received. Connecting to the speaker is easy. Simply turn the speaker on and then select the speaker in your mobile device’s Bluetooth menu. Once connected, your mobile device’s audio will broadcast through the speaker. Another SRS-XG500 speaker can be paired together to give a true stereo effect. While other speakers can be connected, they are limited to certain other Sony models, and they will not play in stereo. Many of the speaker’s functions can be controlled from the Sony Music Center app, although it is not necessary to have the app in order to operate the speaker. The app is required to update the firmware of the speaker and is needed to set certain audio/visual parameters such as setting the equalizer and changing the lighting modes. An interesting aspect of this speaker is its all-weather capability. It holds a level 6 IP rating for water and dust protection. With the rear cap properly fastened (no external connections), this speaker can withstand precipitation and hose-directed water, and it will not allow any dust whatsoever to enter. While I do not recommend that you do this, the manufacturer claims that the speaker was submerged in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes while operating, with no adverse effect.

I like the versatility of adding an instrument or mic. This speaker has a good sound range. Because of the excellent quality, you have to accept the size. Smaller models that I have listened to did not have the thump like this one. For some reason I could not get me MacBook Pro to connect. Still trouble shooting.

Sony SRS-XG500 X-Series speaker weighs approximately 12 lbs and measures 18”L x 10”H x 8”W. Its smooth and sturdy handle runs over the whole length of of the speaker and makes carrying it with one hand easy and comfortable. The speaker uses Bluetooth technology and connected instantly with my cellphone. Music can be also played by wired connection by using the hidden under the back cover USB port to plug in the smartphone or you can use the port to plug in a USB memory stick to play digital files. I didn’t have the chance to try it yet but there is also an input for microphone/guitar.This speaker has a long battery life and charges fast. Only 10 minutes of charging providers approximately 3 hours of playing time. The buttons on the front are made of rubber. They are responsive and easy to press. I really like having them there for when I’m playing the music outside and don’t want to search for my phone to control the volume etc.The sound is great! The speaker is loud for its size and can handle backyard parties without a problem. It produces a clear, full, and balanced sound with a lot of bass. The mega bass button makes a real difference, especially when I’m playing the music outdoors without the walls for the sound to bounce of. Outdoors is where the difference of playing with or without mega bass really shines but that difference is also noticeable indoors. This speaker also adds a touch of visual fun to parties with its LED light rings on the side.Overall, this is a great outdoor/indoor speaker that is easy to carry, loud for its size, simple to operate, and most importantly one that produces great sound. I highly recommend it.

Nice speaker with good sound. Well made, and it’s Sony, so you know what level of quality to expect. Battery life is superior. Better charger for a better battery. Side accent lights are a nice touch.

As a Vine Voice I’m lucky enough to get the chance to regularly test high end speakers I’d never be willing to pay for if I were opening my own wallet, but since I can only use one speaker at a time I usually test each of them for a day or two before boxing them up and putting them in the back of a closet to gather dust. My gadget cupboard is like the entrance to an electronics store Narnia, full of unused Bose and Bang & Olufsen speakers that would make any audiophile weak at the knees.I thought the Sony SRS-XG500 would end up at the back of the cupboard, and in fact I almost didn’t order it as it’s so large I worried that it would take up all my storage space when I inevitably packed it away. After a day of playing around with it, though, I know that it isn’t destined to gather dust. It’s absolutely spectacular. Now I live in a small apartment with paper thin walls. The two speakers I use daily are a Bose Revolve Series II and my Coleman OneSource speaker, both chosen because they’re very small, the sound quality is good and they don’t produce bass that would have my neighbours pounding on my door. The SRS-XG500 is just the opposite. It’s relatively enormous, the size of a small weekend bag, and at 12lbs it’s only portable in the sense that it comes with a handle and can be easily carried to the car to take on a camping trip. You wouldn’t want to lug this thing around all day. It’s also LOUD. This thing can fill a room, apartment, house or empty field with sound. I don’t dare crank it up to the max, but right now I’m listening to it at around 20% volume, and sitting 6 feet from it it’s more than loud enough for personal listening. I just cranked it to 30% for a few seconds, and I know from experience that would be enough for my wife to ask me to turn it down. Anything above 50% would attract the neighbours. 100% would attract the army. Finally, this thing is so physically massive that of course it can crank out the bass. With the Mega Bass function switched on you can feel the thump of the bass even at fairly low volumes, while with the function switched off it’s noticeably subdued in a way that I like (I’m not a fan of bass, partly because I just don’t like it and partly because it carries).I can only guess that this speaker would be absolutely epic at parties, but that’s not what interests me. Any half decent speaker can sound good when you jack up the volume. The true test for me is how it performs when you take it down to a whisper. Most speakers see a big drop off in quality at certain frequencies when you reduce the volume, which is an issue for me as I have severe tinnitus and struggle to hear mids and highs when they’re muddy. That’s not a problem with this speaker. It still sounds fantastic even when it’s almost silent. I don’t detect any drop off whatsoever.Quite honestly, this is the best speaker I’ve used in a long, long time. I’ve no idea what I’ll do with it – I don’t really have the shelf space for it – but I know it’s far too good to go in the cupboard. I’m going to have to find the space.

This review is for the Sony SRS-XG500 X-Series Wireless Portable Bluetooth Party Speaker IP66 Water-Resistant and Dustproof with 30 Hour Battery. I can’t see enough good things about this portable speaker. It packs a punch, especially for it’s size. I don’t usually comment about statements made by other reviewers, but the person who has the one sentence review that translates to “It doesn’t have much volume” apparently doesn’t understand how to operate this speaker. It has volume controls on the speaker itself, plus you control the volume level output from the source device itself, such as a bluetooth connected smart phone. This speaker gets really loud, with some very good bass punch, and brilliant crisp high notes. I would question anyone’s opinion or motive that says this speaker doesn’t have much volume and rates it 1-star. It doesn’t accurately depict this product at all. But enough of this…It is one of the best portable speakers I have used from a design, looks, functionality, and sound quality perspective. The sound produced is awesome, from the high notes to the low deep bass, especially when the “Mega Bass” option is turned on. It pumps out some really nice sound, and has multiple input options that include Bluetooth, 3.5mm jack, a guitar/Mic jack which can also be used for Karaoke, and USB input. You can actually playback and charge your smart device from the USB input, plus there is a 2nd USB slot for charging a 2nd phone. Both ends of the speaker is where the bass sound thumps out, plus is where the light rings are located. It emits really cool lighting effects that you can see even when it’s light, but looks really awesome in low-light conditions. There are different lighting effect modes, depending on the type of music and mode you prefer to express at any given time. The battery life on this thing is awesome, with up to 30 hours of playback time on a single charge. My battery indicator via the Sony app was actually showing 46 hours of battery life. You can get 3 hours of music playback time with just 10 minutes of charge (yes, 10 minutes). So it doesn’t take much charging time at all to max it up to the 30 hours of playback time. There are a couple of apps available to control the speaker, including the Sony Music app and the Fiestable app for more DJ type effects. I personally don’t care for the Fiestable app, but the Sony Music app gives you a lot of control over the speaker’s settings, including both sound and lighting effects. But usage of either app is not required. The speaker connects and works just fine with any other stand-alone music app connected with Bluetooth, such as Amazon Music. It is a fantastic portable speaker, IP66 water resistance rated, weighs only 12 pounds, quality made, looks great with a sleek profile, fun lighting effects, and most importantly produces really great sounds.

In my home, I keep the XG500 on my guitar amplifier, while practicing relatively loud jazz/rock runs. This incredible speaker projects my previously recorded tracks at a volume on par with my playing style. Get it!
