Works well. No complaints. Had it over almost a year and I still feel it’s in great condition.

I haven’t owned an Acer computer since the late 1990s – for a brief time, they were my company’s “goto” brand but I’ve long lost track of them and their products. I generally recall them having quality products at a low price, so I was eager to try out this new TravelMate P6 business laptop, and for the most part, I’m impressed.First thing I noticed was the form factor. At about three-quarters of an inch thick and roughly 2.5 pounds, it’s bigger than my iPad, but not by much. I’ve been a Mac user for a long time, and when I travel, it’s always hard to choose between taking the iPad and taking my Macbook Pro…computers like the TravelMate definitely fill the gap between these extremes, giving you the power of a “real” computer in something that’s not much bigger than an iPad.That aside, I found the construction quality to be better than I expected with a rigid, solid-feeling chassis and a keyboard that I actually like to type on. All the important connectors are there, from plenty of fast USB ports to HDMI output, a microSD slot and the obligatory Ethernet (RJ45) port for connecting to wired networks. The USB-C port connected without incident to my 4K monitor via DisplayPort, so you have a choice of DisplayPort or HDMI for external monitors, and in fact you can use them both at the same time.To my aging eyes, the 14″ screen is a bit on the small side, but it is about as good as any I’m seen in this size range. Colors are vivid, text is sharp and overall, it’s about as good as any. At 1080p, it’s more than adequate resolution for a screen this size, and I had no trouble watching videos on it. The good news is that when you want more, it’s no big deal connecting to an external monitor or projector either via HDMI or DisplayPort. For the security-conscious, the system comes with Intel’s TPM 2.0 module, as well as an integrated fingerprint reader. Many people won’t have much use for the TPM chipset, but I happen to have a custom app that requires this device, so I’m happy to see I can run it on the Acer. The fingerprint reader is a nice addition as well, making it easy to logon to your PC using a fingerprint instead of a password, as well as Windows facial recognition. The TravelMate comes with 802.11AC, and connected to the right WiFi access point, it can give you an amazing 1.7 gigabits of network throughput. I happen to have a Netgear Nighthawk AC router, and yes, I was able to get some stunning network speeds using the TravelMate’s built-in WiFi.I’m not a big fan of the sound you get out of most small systems – there’s just not enough room to put high quality speakers in a device this small. For Skype or video conferencing, the speakers and microphone are more than adequate…for listening to music, I’m going with a fancy set of Bluetooth headphones. The battery is one of the best features on this system…Acer claims it provides about 20 hours of use, while also being able to be recharged in about two hours. In my use, I never quite got the 20 hours Acer claimed, but I did see over 15 hours doing basic Internet browsing – in my book, this is quite good indeed. To some, the 256GB SSD in this system might feel small, but for most business uses, that’s more than adequate. There are other versions of the TravelMate P6 with larger drives, but for most users, 256GB is probably plenty.Same for processing power. While Acer sells this same system with a faster i7 chip, the i5 is more than adequate for most of the tasks the typical business user performs. For high-end gaming, you’ll want to upgrade to the faster processor and more memory, but for things like running the browser, editing files, crunching numbers in Excel and so on, the i5 is fine, and most users probably wouldn’t notice much of a difference on the faster chips. If you’re a Windows user connecting to a corporate environment via VPN and so on, then you’ll appreciate the Windows 10 Pro that Acer includes. For better or worse, Windows is Windows, but everything ran perfectly with none of the unusual setup issues or other glitches you sometimes see.Bottom line is that this is a great all-around compact computer. It’s super lightweight and runs all day on a battery, and it’s definitely aiming at the typical business user that needs things like enhanced security and good connectivity. For a computer in this price range, the Acer is definitely worth a look.

Super light, super fast, looong battery life. The fingerprint reader is hit or miss.. it’s all about holding your finger on the pad for precisely the right amount of time.. two seconds usually does it. If that fails it’s super easy and quick to sign in with a 4 digit code of your choosing. So glad I got this and not the Lenovo Thinkpad. I use a Thinkpad for work and it’s great.. a real workhorse, but this is just as good and lighter so it’s great for travel.

This is a great Laptop, it is well specified and has good equipment (like high quality IPS display, i7 process, 16 GB DDR4, etc). My only note is it does not have a touch screen. The unit is light and durable. It folds out to 180 degrees, but it does not fold to tablet mode, so if you are looking for tablet mode or a touch screen, look elsewhere. The camera has a nice slide cover and works well for teleconferencing. The unit really makes an excellent corporate laptop type computer running your business software.Setup was easy, but note, the location of the fingerprint sensor isn’t obvious, so make sure you know where it is if you want to use it (see the photos here, on the power key). I had to avoid using it during setup as I couldn’t find it initially (and hadn’t bothered to look up where it was yet).IPS is a monitor technology that provides better colors than some of your other gaming monitors, offering better viewing angles and better for photo editing. They keyboard feels good, as does the overall construction. It doesn’t have a nice feel like an Apple, but feels like it will stand up well.

Since the Braswell series, Intel has really done a good job with power management such that it is possible to manufacture ultrabooks. Mac Airs are still the most dominant in the field, but for Windows-compatible versions, the best one out there has been the Dell XPS 13 and 15 models. Every other manufacturer strives to catch up. Older versions of the TravelMate did not meet that standard, but this one is the first one to do so for me.The TravelMate is a small profile 14″ with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD attached. The boot time from the Windows 10 Professional is under 8 seconds from button to usable desktop, and if you really tune the BIOS to bypass the check screen, you can do it in less than 5 seconds. There is no wait or lag between any applications. The camera is placed at a reasonable angle, and images come out quite well, and there is a physical shutter for the camera! The camera and a fingerprint sensor can be configured to the Biometric Hello for authentication. The processor is a Whiskey Lake, which is still on the 14nm process. The voltage draw of that processor is designed to be extremely efficient while delivering more than enough single and multicore compute power to applications. The Thunderbolt 3 port brings the speed of this laptop for external devices clearly into ultrabook territory. This variant lacks the MX250 so graphically intensive business activities (CAD) will perform less well but instead you get more battery power. In terms of construction and load, the materials are quite light and well distributed. The battery is embedded and does not bulge out at any point. The keyboard is full-sized without issues from reduced typing keys (the arrow buttons are smaller, but the Right Shift is still the same. The display does fully fold to the ground and functions well at many angles. The battery life works to 14 hours consistently over two weeks of solid use from 100% to 5% danger, far more than an 8 hour day but I do not quite get the 20 hours advertised. Overall, this is an easy-to-carry business ultrabook with excellent keyboard and screen without compromising internal options. It is not yet surpassed the Dell XPS, but in terms of price to features, the value proposition is better than the Dell XPS with this generation.

I’ve been using a MacBook Air for years and I finally decided I’m ready to switch to a PC. I first thought I’d make the leap to the Dell XPS, since those seem to be the most comparable, but then I saw this little guy.I’m glad I did.The TravelMate is light and small, which is important since I take my laptop with me everywhere I go.It boots up rapidly – from off to using an app in about 8 seconds.Fingerprint sensor has been flawless for me.The camera is placed well and the physical closure is so nice.Even though it is small, it doesn’t compromise on options. Unlike SOME manufacturers that have eliminated all the ports, this still includes: 2 USB, 1 USB-C, 1 HDMI, 1 Micro-SD, 1 Ethernet port, 1 headphone port. The keyboard has a nice responsiveness to it and is large enough that I can type quickly and accurately. It’s nice that the screen lays completely flat, though I don’t find that I need that capability too often. The screen is viewable at all angles, and while it isn’t the crispest resolution I’ve ever seen, it’s definitely decent.I’ve yet to run into problems with lag or slowing, even when I have multiple heavy-duty apps open. The battery life isn’t quite as good as advertised, but I’ve never found a computer that does live up to the promises. Still, I’m able to use it all day, even photo editing, without running out of juice. I am averaging about 16 hours per charge. My one complaint is the speakers. They aren’t too good. Oh well, can’t have it all.I’m impressed with how sturdy and well-built this feels while still managing to be incredibly lightweight. As a computer for someone on the go, I really can’t find fault.

Love this laptop! It is very light and thin but still has plenty of ports (2 USB, 1 USB-C, 1 HDMI, 1 Micro-SD, 1 Ethernet port, 1 headphone port. The keyboard keys are fairly quiet and really feel nice under my fingertips. I wish the keys were a little closer together, but that’s nitpicking from someone who’s used to a MacBook. I would certainly get used to these quickly and prefer the tactile feel to that of my MacBook Pro (2016) keys.Setting up was quick and simple. Cortana guided me through it. She didn’t always hear my responses when I spoke back, particularly the word “No.” Maybe she’s a toddler. 😉 But overall the Cortana experience with setup was pleasant. The fingerprint sensor works really well! I love it, and I love that it’s integrated with the power button—nice design there.I set it up, then restarted it. It’s super fast, while rebooting and in its general response times. That Corei7 is speedy, and the 16GB of RAM should keep it fast even with plenty of software installed. Plus, with a 512GB solid-state drive, you can fit a lot on here…and the SSD will help this thing stay fast too.The touch pad has a really great, smooth texture and is very responsive. The screen is fantastic—so vibrant and clear! Seriously love this screen.I really love this computer. It’s light in weight but not in features, and I love the TACTILE experience…soft, smooth, quiet, and responsive.

A nice travel machine – while I’m retired and don’t push a computer to the limits, I do use it for normal jobs (internet, word processing, email, spreadsheets) and I appreciate easy to use security options; this machine is great for travel – unique security features with the fingerprint reader for initial access, a personal secure drive only accessible with fingerprint or password authorization, a computer security slot, the ability to encrypt select files/folders and extremely light (2.6 lbs); screen resolution excellent and the 14” size is fine for long sessions; windows 10 pro provides all the operating options you need away from home; set up was fast (half an hour) and it’s up and running; long battery life (estimated at 20 hrs with fast charging); 2 3.0 USB ports is a plus; initially I was a little concerned about the 8 GB of RAM, but with the 256 GB SSD there’s no memory or speed impairment; micro SD slot for extra memory; for the price this is an amazing travel computer – I’ve used chrome computers in the past for travel but at this price having a light weight, secure system with the advantages and flexibility of a windows 10 pro operating system is a plus – the features at this price point make it excellent value for the average traveler who wants a good all around, light computer for trips – and Acer takes security seriously with the “Acer Proshield” package; recommend highly at this price of just under $800 – a lot of computer power and features for the $’s
