I’ve had this laptop for a couple months now. Here are my pros/cons, especially where the laptop differs from my expectations. Overall I’d definitely recommend this laptop to people, though. The screen is great. I love the full HD 1920×1080 resolution. At 15″ that’s a bit dense, and if your eyes are getting old you may find things too small. But it’s a beautiful screen overall! Bright, high contrast, sharp. The solid state drive and lots of RAM make this very fast. I can’t believe how fast it boots. The power button feels flimsy. This button is not going to last 10 years if I’m pressing it every day. Mostly I put it in “sleep” mode when not using it, and can wake it with any key on the keyboard. I end up using the actual power button maybe once every week or two, so hopefully that makes it last longer.Sometimes when I put it in “sleep” mode, it wakes up on its own. I don’t understand why. It’s probably some setting somewhere. I did discover that the external USB mouse I had attached was automatically configured to be a device that can wake the laptop from sleep, if the mouse moves. I disabled that, and that reduced how often the laptop wakes up on its own, but didn’t entirely eliminate it.The keyboard is generous, for a laptop. It even has the 10-key on the right side. Some of the key placements are not what I’m used to, but laptop keyboards always make compromises. And the keys are very comfortable. The function keys (F1-F12 across the top) default to a *different* use (e.g., bright/dim the screen, volume up/down, etc.) and to use them for traditional F1-F12 functions (e.g., F2 = rename, F5 = refresh, etc.) you have to hold down a new “Fn” key down by Ctrl/Shift/Alt. I find this unfortunate because 9 times out of 10 I want the F1-F12 functions, not the others. The laptop has 4 rubberized feet on the bottom. However, when you flip up the screen, the hinge extends downward and actually lifts the laptop up off its back two rubberized feet. This is obviously by design, but wow that’s a weird design. The laptop spends most of its time sitting on the hinge in the back, and the front two rubberized feet.Only two USB ports is a bit of a disappointment. I immediately bought two Sabrent 4-port USB hubs, one for each laptop port. Now I’m good to go at home, and when on travel I rarely need even the two built-in ports. Having USB-3 speeds is sure nice if you have external hard drives or other devices that can handle it!Only one HDMI port (and no other external monitor port) makes it hard to have this laptop drive two big monitors. I had to end up with one external monitor plus the built-in screen, which I don’t like because they are such different sizes. There are external USB-C “docking” stations that solve this, but I have not tried one.

Except a dvd drive and I know those have gone away. It doesn’t have a touch screen either, but for the processor and ram I was pleased with the price. My laptop had been problematic for quite some time before suddenly giving up the ghost during another trouble shooting session. So it’s nice to have a new laptop where everything is working. It was convenient to order it from Amazon .

  3. Megan Rhodes

I have never bought a new laptop on Amazon before but this laptop is seriously great. I love the space it has and it is so much lighter than my old laptop. The I7 is so fast and the battery life is great. It has everything I need to be a successful student.

  4. Alec

I needed a laptop with an i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, and 500 GB storage for my Master’s in Business Analytics program. Most other laptops that meet these requirements cost $1,200 – $2,000. This laptop is very smooth, and is easy to use and customize. 10/10 would recommend for business and daily use. This is the best use of $900 I have spent.

To start, I am not a gamer, do not do social media and I don’t use this for movies or entertainment. This is for work and business use only. Here are the good points:Is not touch screen. It is getting harder and harder to find a laptop without touch screen. Tablets need touch screens, laptops do not.Very thin but also built very well. No flex and hinges are tight with no play and yet easy to open/close.Battery life is very good. My useage is most plugged in but I have yet to run out of battery when I take it with me and not run off outlet. I would estimate well over 10 hours of non movie watching use. Recharged extremely fast.Screen is bright and easy to look at. I never use my laptops out in the sun so I can’t say what it does outdoors, but my question is always why would I use it outside in the sun anyway? The keyboard has a great tactile feel to it and the key spacing and height are just right for me. It also has a separate numeric keypad which is a feature I demand in a laptop. With the SSD boot up and overall performance is lighting fast. This is my first laptop with SSD and I will be putting them in every other laptop I have.Unlike other reviews I read, I have not felt a y excessive heat at any time no matter the task. It always cool and I can’t remember ever hearing the fan come on. If it has it is so quiet it can’t be heard. The styling is the best I have had on any laptop I’ve owned. It simply looks and feels great. Now for the bad points:It is HP so that means 30 minutes of removing the bloatware and a little reconfiguring of certain features. I’m waiting for the day when I get a laptop from any company and when I turn it on is not branded with software I don’t want or need, does not ask me every 3 seconds to sign up for some program or service I don’t want, or asks me continuously to register. If I day no or decline, I mean it, not ask me later again and again. I want to turn the machine on, it has an operating system installed and that it all. I have my own software, I have my own subscription to office, and I don’t want anyone telling me how to set my machine up. HP take notice. You make good hardware, but you seriously lack in the software department. Every piece of HP software I have used has caused major issues if it even works. Most of it is sales pitches to sign up for this or that. There is one major exception and that is the instant ink program for printers. That is the best thing since sliced bread. Never run out of ink, always ships I plenty of time and the cartridges are super capacity, I’d say 3x the retail version so they don’t run low often or surprise you in the middle of a print job with an empty page. Shameless pitch for no charge.I have not found any other negatives in use so far. This laptop may not be at the top of the numbers heap in benchmarks but I always maintain that who cares? If the produce performs for me and does what I need it to do than it is a good product. This laptop does just that. It does everything well and without fanfare. It just works and that is the mark of good design.

  6. Roland

It is not the top of the line, even though it has the latest greatest core i7. I am impressed with its performance, video streaming and video editing is great. Multi apps open, not a problem. It is smooth and reliable. I have read other reviews about the screen crapping out, mine has never done that, keep my fingers crossed. I love it for what its worth. Higher video editing and streaming, a graphics card is req, so what do you expect from a shared memory w iris graphics. That being said, it performs well. I got the most bang for the buck.

  7. Duckie

Overall this is a great buy. I have had it now for two months, and have worked well with it. The processing speed is top notch, and now notice heavily what I was missing without it. Watch your battery though, this bugger runs through it, but that is expected for a heavier processor. The one thing I don’t like, and not a lick related to the hardware, is Microsofts new software setup. Everything is subscription based…which is garbage. Word has been relatively the same for 30 years, no one needs to pay monthly for it.Above all, great value buy. Great computer.

  8. C. C. Faison

This computer was exactly what I was looking for. It’s extremely fast booting up, and, if you look at task manager, you can see that there are no processes eating up CPU time or power, unlike the older laptop I have. The older laptop suffered from a process that was shown to be tying up as much as 75% of CPU time and “extremely high” power usage. That is not the case in this laptop, highest power usage I saw was “low”. I went through the beginning charges of the battery as the included pamphlet recommended, and I now get around 8 hours of usage before having to recharge it. I’ve never had a laptop like this before. I love it.

  9. Sandy

    Best laptop I’ve ever owned

  10. Jack C. Sr.

This is the best laptop I have ever owned. And I have owned 4 others. This thing is freaky fast, great screen and boots almost instantly. My last laptop was also an Intel Core I7 that was slow and laggy from day one. I have owned and built my own computers since 1984. That Toshiba laptop i could never figure out it’s problems for 4 years. It was almost identical in specs as this new HP. So i was pretty hesitant on getting another kind with the same type of processor. But I pulled the trigger on this HP Core 7 and boy am I glad I did. This gem is awesome. I looked at many on Amazon before deciding on this one as I have had a good HP laptop before. The only thing I miss is I thought this model had an illuminated keyboard, and it does not. It must have been another model I was looking at. While I love a backlit keyboard, I don’t care because this laptop is fantastic. I couldn’t be happier with this purchase. Buy it if you need a good laptop, you won’t be sorry either. Thank you HP.
