Pros: Everything. Even my dog watches TV now.It supports atmos to receiver via earc hdmi.Hype is real.Cons: it’s still too damn bright. Like every digital signal you will still see some slight large digital Pixelation on fast moving things like waterfalls or dust storm. I’m no expert but I think it’s more to do with digital encoding and compression.I haven’t tested 4k bluray as I still don’t have a ps5!!! Get some ps5 in stock already! Let these scalpers (like short sellers) burn.Hold AMC.

This is the nicest TV I have ever owned personally. The price is reasonable for what’s on the market. The picture quality, color, sound, and ease/smoothness of operation are on point with this guy. My only complaint is the remote. The A90J comes with a very cool light up and Silver Paneled remote, it’s the next model up. I’m sorry but if I pay 2500 dollars for a television give me the cool remote. That is absurd Sony. Everything else is great.

Great TV once I figured out how to get it to quit doing the home screen every. time. i. turn. it. on…. Power on behavior was buried 15 layers over to remember the last input on startup… once I got that I was happy I was literally considering sending it back, it was that annoying. I couldn’t believe they’d make TV that stupid… there had to be a setting to fix it, it’s not obvious searching for it online either… it was good old trial and error.I’m kinda complaining about the smart tv stuff, maybe I’m just not progressive enough with my choices, but my God after signing into everything but my middle school yearbook account I had enough of the options… just be a TV already. I went through and deleted or disabled probably 20 different aps, way more than I need. Still not sure what the point of bluetooth is supposed to be. can’t display anything from the phone on it. I know video would be impossible, but music or still images should be no problem. That said, the picture is beautiful, I was 2 rooms over and there was a nature program on from the BBC and as they went over the waterfall with the camera (only in 2k mind you) I was like, wow… yeah, that’s worth every bit of $3k… I haven’t fed it a 4k signal yet, but I can only imagine what it will look like. This replaced a 65 inch Mitsubishi 1080i projection TV that got nuked in a lightning attack. It was a good upgrade.Bottom line, happy, would recommend.

I’m going to complete this review in stages as I get more experience with this massive technological marvel.Stage 1: Unboxing and setupSony got the box right. Yeah… I think it is worthwhile to talk about the box. The last large flat-panel TV I got was a few years ago and getting it out of the box without breaking it was a far bigger challenge than it should have been. Sony solved the issues from how my last TV was boxed by making this a modular sleeve and end-caps, secured by 2x plastic straps around the outside. Just cut the straps and you can lift off the top box panel, the TV’s feet and instructions are easily accessible at this point. Then follow the directions and pull the sleeve up and off, leaving just your TV standing in the bottom panel’s styrofoam. Have someone lift one end of the TV while you slip the foot into place. Then switch to the other end and repeat. And boom… assembly is done.At 50 Lbs it was an easy 2 person lift to get the TV from the floor to the top of the dresser.Since this is a “smart” tv, we were able to declutter a bit and remove the Roku that fed our prior TV.The setup was pretty straightforward and menu-driven. We declined most of the “extra” options that monitor your activity to suggest stuff to you. No thanks! We turned off voice commands as well. I really don’t need a device listening to every word I say.We were able to get logged in to Amazon Prime Video, Disney +, and Plex in short order. The first test of picture quality was an episode of The Mandalorian in 4k Ultra. It was simply stunning. I mean amazing! On the audio side I think I may be at the point where I’m going to have to upgrade my home theater sound system. With our last TV I just used the headphone out to feed my head unit. I thought I found the right plug for the headphone out on the TV, but am only getting the side channels… not the center channel. I suspect this is a settings issue that I will troubleshoot when I get back from a business trip (yeah… the TV arrived about and hour before I was supposed to leave for the trip). In the meantime I unplugged the headphone wire to use the TV’s built in audio. I watched a couple of guitar review videos on Youtube and was shocked at how good the TV sounds by itself. I’ll still work on my overall home theater audio setup, but I don’t feel bad leaving this sit until I have time to deal with it. I’ll explore home theater head units with HDMI input to take advantage of the eARC enable connector. The other input we hooked up was the coax cable from the antenna on our roof. We got about 19 channels on our old TV. This new Sony found 26, which I attribute to the new ATSC 3.0 tuner picking up additional channels. The picture quality of the OTA broadcast channels is jaw dropping. We have no other input sources at the moment.Stage 2: Enter the technofile! In the next couple of weeks I’ll have my father over to give this TV a workout and report his thoughts. While I am an unabashed gear-head, I haven’t kept up with all of the new TV tech… but he definitely has. He has thought about buying this exact TV model. So, he is very eager to come play with the TV and share his findings… after I get back from my business trip and get settled.

The TV looks amazing. Truly a great OLED. 4k 120hz is great. 0 complaints. The brightness is fine for me. The screen is really reflective and direct light will be really visible but that’s expected of OLED.The TV came with Spanish manuals and on first boot everything was in Spanish. Not a big deal but a little strange. Luckily it wasn’t set to some other language because I know enough Spanish that I could still navigate the menus.Remote control isn’t backlit. For a TV at this price that’s a bit insane. You might not think that matters but for a TV that looks best in dark rooms it does. You cant do a thing in the dark with the stock remote. I ended up buying the RMF-TX621U which is $100. Kind of ridiculous.

I have been in the market for some time for a new 65″ panel. Why? Oh, because I had a nice 4k Samsung tv that had backlight failure less than a year after the warranty expired. And given that the auto on/off of my nearly brand new 32″ Samsung curved monitor was no longer working, I had pretty much written Samsung off as a potential source for my new TV.Good riddens.I have been eyeballing some of the new OLED displays released at CES this year, being seriously disgruntled with my current tv, and this beautiful piece of kit came available. Boy am I glad I picked this up. Because this set BURIES my Samsung.I know a lot of you are weighing this (A80J) with the more upscale (and expensive) A90J. As someone coming from an already good quality (at least initially) 4K tv, I come into this comparing it to an already decent television. And as someone that comes from a 4K Sammy to this Sony, spend the extra $ on the A90J like, only if your ego is tied to your television. Now I’m not dogging the A90J (far from it), from what I’ve read it’s an incredible set. But…If I had the money in my pocket, and I was going to buy a TV, now that I have a few titles on my A80J, I can honestly say, give me the A80J, and I’ll use the money I save to buy 30 or 40 AAA 4K titles and it’ll be money well spent.Where to begin?I didn’t take many pictures because, imagining that you can discern the quality of the image on your own monitor is silly. The picture makes you literally smile. That says it all. But the one picture I did snap is really to highlight the frankly INCREDIBLE viewing angle of this television. No, I mean it’s the best viewing angle of any TV I’ve ever SEEN. The photo I took is literally as steep of an angle as I can get in relation to the screen and still be able to tell you’re looking at a screen. So if you have a room with varied seating positions? And some people complain that they can’t see the set well at extreme angles? Oh boy do you need to try THIS set. It’s literally hard to believe how steep a viewing angle this has. It is jaw-droppingly sharp, and the color saturation is just out of this world. The audio quality is far and above what most televisions offer. I would, however, like to qualify this by saying my home theater consists of a Yamaha RX-V681 powering an entire suite of Klipsch speakers, including dual 12″ .2 subwoofers. So I won’t go so far as to say, forget the home theater speakers. Lol, no. At the end of the day, you still have the limits of a television as far as speakers goes. Here’s what I will say. If you don’t do “home theater” but are one of those folks that a sound bar is good enough for? You could use this set without a sound bar, easily. The sound is that good, and will be fine for those that don’t demand full THX surround sound.I demand full THX (or better) surround sound, so, the speakers are a stop-gap for me until I can get all my home theater gear hooked up to the new TV. For a built-in audio system, however, it’s fantastic, and I wanted to test it all out before going full Yamaha on it.My source for this test is none other than the Sony UPB-X800 (a perfect match if ever there was one) and a selection of 4k titles fit for a set such as this. The titles I tested this with:Star Wars: The Last JediThor: RagnarokAvengers: EndgameSpiderman: Into the SpiderverseAnnnd, I don’t own it on 4k but I wanted to see how Star Trek: Into Darkness fared on this after being upconverted.I will say this. It was like watching many of these movies for the first time. From the opening credits on Star Wars, where you swear you can make out every single star against the darkness of space, to the lens flare of JJ Abraham’s Star Trek doing it’s thing, the image quality has just been astounding. What TV brand was I using before this? I seem to have forgotten…A few things of note in the menu that I found. First, they were nice enough to include the option to delete all the factory demo stuff. Boy, THAT sure is nice. Usually they won’t ALLOW you to delete that stuff if you want to. Sony actually gives you the option. Bravo. And there are quite a few “picture modes”, including “Cinema” and “Game”, but I think the one that rules them all is “Vivid”. It looks just like it sounds. Of course, if you spend $3k on a TV, I shouldn’t think it unreasonable to consider a professional tuning and calibration, it would probably be money well spent to get the absolute best from this set. But know that even with “amateur calibration” like the few little things I can do in the settings have yielded fantastic results. Lastly, I noted this has a “screen refresh” feature in the settings, apparently it helps reduce or eliminate screen ghosting. This is pretty awesome actually, and I intend to start running this a few times a month as a kind of “oil change” / “preventative maintenance” for the OLED panel. There’s nothing wrong with taking care of your television! Also, unlike most sets where you have 2 options, “legs” or “wall mount”, you can install the legs for this 3 different ways, depending on your particular configuration. Flexibility is never unwelcome.I even had to try a little gaming, but to be honest, I can’t reach the full potential there, owning a “mere” PS4 Pro. Gran Turismo Sport has been made fresh again. But, admittedly, this fantastic set has re-kindled in me the desire to upgrade to the PS5. As an owner of a Playseat and Logitech G29 racing wheel, I plan on being first in line for Gran Turismo 7 when it releases in 2020, and I WANT TO PLAY IT ON THIS TV. Yesterday. Sony, it sure would be cool if you could get some PS5’s into the market. This set is BEGGING for PS5. It’s sitting behind me as I write this, whispering “PS5” into my ear. Shh, be patient. It’s coming. But yes, I’m ready to trade in my PS4 so I can do on this TV what’s meant to be done.As I said before, I don’t come from a cheap little TV. So I think I can give an honest vote about “Is A90J worth the cost difference vs A80J?” I can’t see it. I’d rather put the money saved towards a stack of 4k titles to enjoy on my A80J.For the money you save on this vs the A90J, you can buy a stack of 4K titles AND a UBP-X800 V2. It’s a no-brainer. The only way I can say “Oh, yeah, A90J!” is if you have a room full of money and a wheel barrow to cart it around. This set runs CIRCLES around my 4K Sammy. It’s bright. It’s vivid. It’s sharp. It’s INCREDIBLE. The viewing angle is out of this world and the contrast…the contrast makes me want to talk about contrast to people that have no desire to speak to me ABOUT contrast. I’ve never seen blacker blacks nor brighter whites.I’m going to be re-watching a lot of my old favorites for a while on this beauty. Dr. Strange, Alien, and some Close Encounters of the Third Kind are high on my list. This tv is literally making me dig through my collection, old and new, to see them in their grandeur and splendor.Isn’t that what it’s all about? If you need a new TV and OLED is what you want, you can’t go wrong here. You just can’t. Sony has really hit this one out of the park. 2021 is a darn good year for new TV’s. And you’re looking at one of the finest.I hope my experience with the A80J helps to illustrate for you what a fantastic set this truly is.

I had a Samsung Series 8, QLED HDR Curved… that I attained it 12 years after my 1080p Sony Died from 2007. And in terms of streaming I found the Android Smart TV lacking in many function and broadband bandwidth was only 2G. Unless I watched a UHD Blu-Ray with HDR- (I had preferred the 4K Fire Stick), I honestly could not see much of a difference except a better 1080p? Regardless the Samsung flickered 4 years later- basic resets couldn’t fix it, so I figured you want quality you have to spend cash- but not insane cash.I also don’t have a room where anything larger than 55′ is practical. I came across the A80J and A90J Bravia TV- and I am sure next to each other i’d be able to see a difference- that there is a 900 dollar difference, but independently unlikely.I love this TV it’s my first OLED TV and my first time truly experiencing 4K. I don’t have a problem in a moderately lit room, the glare is minimal if there is a light source facing the screen depending on the angle of viewing. The Wide angle is surprisingly phenomenal so if you have a movie party- you can get a semi circle going and above a 20 degree angle you’ll see it crisply and nicely.I’ve had to adjust the color it for it’s basic operating system which is a Google TV platform that plays in Dolby Vision. I don’t see a huge difference in the color spectrum form my Fire 4K stick, and prefer my Fire Stick witch has HDR10 color spectrum. From what I read in reviews in outside periodicals, On the A80J to appreciate the significantly larger color spectrum you should attain the 67′ inch set which is the same price as the 55′ A90J. (Netflix offers a few tittles in Dolby Vision, as does HBO MAX though those two it’s rare, but Disney Plus will adjust to the platform for audio and visual);Regardless I am blown away by the picture clarity, it’s interface, and depending on your preference, I found the built in Audio into the screen to be Atmos and excellent for the first time in flat panel screens. I prefer a 5.1 experience, but a sound bar is not really required for this set.One thing to clarify that I was slightly disappointed with is that you can either Lift the height and the legs remain spread out, but if you bring the legs in closer then you can’t elevate it so the adjustable hight and width is either/ or and the hight is about 3-4 inches anyway. In general I feel the TV (and technology is getting out of hand), but if you want a good high end picture quality TV I haven’t been this impressed with a home entertainment system since back in the day when TV’s were 2-450 Lbs and the Wega came out with DVD players lol.I do feel fortunate to have a room perfect for a 55′ but the higher end TV’s are slowly phasing to just HUGE 65 and over.My Soundbar is bluetooth compatible with the set though not on the list of Audio Systems- so it’s a 5.1 DD+ but the Sony remote volume is not compatible with it so to adjust volume I need to utilize the sounder remote.I also have high end Blue Tooth Bose headphones- but I have not been able to hook them via Blue Tooth, I may be missing something.

The last TV I had was a 1080P and upgrading to the Sony 55″ XR55A80J BRAVIA XR OLED 4K Ultra HD Smart Google TV I can say that it is such a huge difference that it’s nothing less than amazing. Between the picture/sound quality and the features just wow! That said lets dig into this awesome TV!In the box/initial setup: First things first, the TV was very well packaged and easily removed from packaging for setup. I love how Sony made removal from the packaging easy by using a sleeved system by which you cut the straps and tear down the side at the perforations allowing super easy access. All in all the TV weighs what seems to be 40-45lbs and as such is easy to move even by a single person as I did. After removing a few more protective items we were able to attache the feet (which have several modes of attachment) and set the TV on the location we chose. Attaching the Blueray player, cable box, and surround system was of course super easy. Wifi and initial setup was easy using the on screen prompts and the google home app on my tablet which we already had in use. Next the app setup for vudu, Netflix, Prime video, Disney plus and Spotify were quick and easy. We also added VLC player to access the movies we have on our home Samba drive.Use/Quality: As for picture quality it is simply incredible. Everything we play whether DVD or Blueray looks stunning with the upscaling and as for true 4k we don’t have anything at that level yet, but with what we see on our existing setup it will be amazing! The contrast is the best black we have seen on any TV so far. Side note: the TV comes with Bravia Core which is a streaming service that from what we understand has true 4k content, so we are looking forward to seeing 4k on this TV. As for sound quality we tried it both WITH and WITHOUT our current surround sound system and man, the sound quality from the TV by itself is just awesome! You really can get by without a surround system but with what we are hearing out of the TV we will be upgrading our surround sound to a Sony soundbar soon. App usage is fast and lag-less, as for the voice control it flawlessly recognizes what we say correctly.Final thoughts on the BRAVIA XR OLED 4K Ultra HD TV are again one word, WOW! I really can’t stress enough the picture and sound quality of this TV. Not to mention it having no lag on menu and apps screens. Sony did this right which is what I expect from Sony. This TV is truly the top of the line in my book at a great price!

I was going to get this tv at the yellow tag store but they wouldn’t match the price. Delivery was great and on time. Packaging was perfect, it was shipped with an outer box as well to protect the original box the tv comes in.The key differences between this OLED and my big screen LED are…1. I can sit directly in front of it and not see any pixels.2. Blacks are blacker and whites are whiter.3. A little slower to boot up.4. Plenty Bright enough but led is slightly brighter.5. Led is sharper but oled has a smoother look to it which does make it easy on this eyes and pleasant to watch.Has phenomenal colors.6. Almost has a 3d look to it on high movies, documentaries like National Geographic, Animated stuff. In the end I can be happy with either one but I think I prefer the Oled.

This is the Best OLED TV I have ever owned. Of course technology will change that within a couple years, but if you are on the fence considering which current OLED to buy, This is the one.. The 77″ size compared with the price, and features make this a Great Deal. Sony A80J is fantastic.. Pair it with a Sony PS5 and you will probably never leave your living room again.!!Shipping from Amazon was perfect. Fast, High Quality service.I had done a lot of research before hitting the Buy Button, and am Enthusiastically Pleased with the outcome.
