After a recent heart attack, my exercise program is limited by precise heart rates. Chest straps are the most accurate heart rate monitors, and I have been using a Polar chest strap monitor. But I was looking for an accurate wrist HRM so I would not always need to use a chest strap. I bought the Ignite mostly because it performed well on a Youtube video that did a very detailed comparison of the Ignite vs a chest strap.I am very pleased. I did my own heart rate comparison–the Ignite vs my chest strap–and the Ignite was very close across the range of heart rates tested (60-120; 120 is my current upper limit). The Ignite is a few seconds slower to react to changes than the chest strap, but that is OK for my purposes. I tested both walking and biking and the Ignite was accurate within a couple seconds in both activities. The manual does recommend that, during activities, the watch should be worn snug and an inch or so above the wrist bone. I do think placement is an important factor for accuracy during activity.A comment on battery life. When I am doing what the Ignite calls a “Training Activity” (walk, run, bike, etc.), the watch measures heart rate continuously, tracks my location with GPS, and I choose to have the watch face lit up continuously (otherwise it only lights up when you raise and turn your wrist). With those functions activated, the watch burns 10-12% of the battery life per 30 minutes. If you set it on an indoor activity (treadmill or stationary bike), it only burns about 4% per 30 minutes. I am guessing the difference is that the indoor activities do not activate GPS, but I’m not sure if that’s the reason. Two other comments:-In terms of size, my wrist is smallish, about 7 inches around. I was afraid the watch would be too big. But it doesn’t feel too big (see pic), maybe because it is quite light-weight and the band is also light.-The yellow band that I bought is silicone and quite light weight. The buckle is lightweight too. It does have holes every 3/16 inches so it is easy to adjust it to just the right tightness for you. Because of the light weight, I’m not sure how long it will hold up, but overall I’ll accept that risk in return for keeping the weight of the watch light.

I absolutely love this “do it all” watch. I have had many other fitness watches but love the recovery element this polar ignite has. Tracking sleep as well as the breathing exercises has really been a game changer for me.

  3. A triathlete’s view

I bought this because I wanted a clean and lightweight design watch in a casual environment and would also keep me honest about my training activity/ recovery. So far it has met my expectations. To date, I have used this watch for swimming (25M pool), road cycling, trail and road running and especially for the “sleep tracker” feature. I have found the watch was easy to use for all these activities and after one week, the experience in my training has improved as I make small changes recommended by the device.Pro: Function wise, I like having only one button to push and the touch screen is intuitive. The watch GPS hooked up quickly for workouts and the heart rate information was easy to see. Program wise, I like the suggested work out routines and have started to follow those. I also like the polar flow app and how the device easily syncs and uploads my data from the day’s activities. When I use the app, I feel a sense of accomplishment as I review my activities and see the “evaluation” that comes with it. This motivates me to want to work out again the next day!Con: this is a minor complaint, but to enable “auto stop” and set lap length in miles, I had to sync my watch with the Polar Flow App instead of making the adjustment on the watch. That said, this only had to be done one time and the watch works perfectly for me now.Bottom line is that this Triathlete really likes this device. I have read that the watch straps are easily changed so my next step is to buy two new watch strap colors (black and yellow) just to keep my look fresh for the rest of summer through fall.

I’ve had this watch for about 2 hours… but… light weight, beautiful screen. The resting heart rate is SPOT ON. Way more accurate than my Apple Watch 4. Or any other watch I’ve had… I’m having a tiny bit of trouble with the notifications. Texts aren’t coming through. I’ve gotten 2 Twitter messages! The screen is bright and beautiful! I wish there was a screen protector for this. So far, cannot find one. Afraid of scratching it! Those are my initial impressions. Will update when I really ‘use’ it! Thank you Polar and Amazon.. and the vendor!

I LOVE this watch! It has a sleek design that’s beautiful, comfortable, and easy to wear 24/7. I have really small wrists so I was extremely pleased with the different options in sizing so I wouldn’t have any extra band flapping around (like most fitness watches!)Everything about this watch is great. The touch screen is extremely responsive and easy to navigate, without prior instruction even. I prefer that it only has one “button” on the outside, this means it doesn’t easily get bumped during activity (problems I’ve had with previous fitness watches) and you have more control via the screen. As a runner, I love the format during activity it’s simple and gives me all the information I need, without being overly distracting. The stats it gives you after your workout is more expansive than I anticiapted – even including altitude, cadence, etc! The heart rate monitor is very accurate. And the sleep analysis is an extra added bonus.

I have opted for Polar products for more than 15 years. I finally ditched the bulk of my M400 (which I LOVED) for the improved Polar Ignite. The Ignite is smaller and to say the least, offers SO much more than just activity tracking. The built-in HR monitor is absolutely accurate at least when I compare it to my other Polar HR monitors (Oh1 and H10). The ability to track swimming is pretty awesome and the sleep and ANS recharging data are phenomenal. I have yet to make use of the Serene mode but look forward to stopping long enough to try it. Honestly, you cannot beat what this watch offers for the price. The only thing I miss from my original Polar from 15 years ago is the birthday cake pop up every year on my birthday. That always made me smile. Polar, I am your customer for life.

As fitness tech consumers in 2019, I feel like we are owed accurate GPS, accurate-ish wrist heart rate, easy to use/set up, and something passable as trendy. The Polar Ignite delivers on those points (very well I might add) but isn’t the reason I compelled to write a review. For the last few years all other trackers have been quite frankly garbage when it comes to meaningful recovery and sleep tracking. Im not sure what sort of magic Polar used here but every other fitness wearable maker should be ashamed that Polar is so far ahead with the sleep and recovery tracking. Again, we all have style and personal preferences when it comes to looks and table stakes such as an app or GPS features, but if you want real sleep and recovery data…nothing on the market today is even close to the Ignite

I’ve had multiple FitBit models over the years and don’t have any complaints about them. But when the last one conked out I decided to try something different – just for the sake of mental stimulation. And I’m glad I did. This Polar watch provides a surprising and generous amount of functionality. There’s a wow factor right there. I’m still discovering it all. Currently, I’m primarily a walker, and I wanted to get the GPS feature to track my walks. I need to lose about 25 pounds and plan to start biking and engaging on other sports that Polar can track as well.I was impressed by the level of accuracy of the GPS: even when I cross from one side of a small bridge to the other, this movement showed up on the GPS map afterward. Being able to see maps of where I’ve walked motivates me to cover more ground.I wear it at night to track my sleep quality too, and paying attention to this has had the effect of me putting greater emphasis on getting more sleep and better quality sleep. The display is colorful and tells you much more than a FitBit watch does. I love it. Note: in bright sunlight will — necessarily — seem a bit muted. I really like the display – my favorite watch face option has a turquoise band of color that gradually travels the circumference of your watch as you approach your daily goal. (I chose the lowest level goal that’s pre-set. I’m not sure yet how it’s measured, but it’s not per 10k steps. So I suspect it’s a combo of heart rate, steps, and other things.)I love this feature because in a second I can see where I’m at w/my daily goal. The Polar Ignite also has a fabulous breathing tool called SERENE: this reminds me of the old Stresseraser device that was so effective and powerful. You’ll see animated bubbles that collect in the center of the watch, then disperse away — you’re prompted to breathe in and out to match the bubbles’ movements. Some very minor suggestions to the company regarding the set up and launch experience.1) When the watch starts up the Polar logo is very small. It seems like an underwhelming experience. You have a fantastic product: I’d suggest making the logo bigger and ensure it’s Retina-quality-crisp. Make a splash with your new customer! Don’t be shy.2) I found the set up on laptop confusing: I followed the directions, but the watch kept trying to “sync” — it would take forever and not quite fully sync, then I’d unplug it and get a message to try to sync it again. Not sure if it actually had to sync – there was no data on it to start.3) Also, when I first attached the watch to the computer, there was a brief flash of “static snow” – like the kind you’d see on an old black + white TV. This happened each time I connected it while I was trying to get it set up. It and made me wonder at first if I had a defective unit. (No, it’s fine.)4) I wound up choosing the “set up on watch” option (instead of laptop) and that worked fast, and everything else worked afterwards.Lastly, a very minor point: I’m an outlier who is right-handed and wears my watch on my right hand. The button placement for me then was less than ideal. Would be nice if Polar had a left-handed model.

First of all, Polar nailed the form factor on the Ignite (Small/Thin/Sleek/Vivid Display). I have tried other supposedly 24/7 based trackers but this takes the cake. It is super light and is the first ‘watch form’ tracker I can wear while sleeping with no complaints. Finally accurate wrist based Heart Rate and GPS for my varying activities throughout the week (mainly run/soccer/cycle). GPS connects very quickly and has measured up to the “actual” distances so far.The sleep metrics are very easy to understand (although the logic behind it seems very scientific and is beyond me). It is interesting to see these metrics on such a granular level, and perhaps I can actually start tweaking my sleep schedule accordingly. The new features that recommend the workout of the day are pretty cool too and seem to be a new feature for a Polar watch. I haven’t had a chance to follow these yet, but am really interested in seeing some recovery recommendations since that has been a pain point for me as of late.

The Polar Ignite does a lot more than I expected. It is more than a FitBit, less than an Apple Watch which is right where I wanted it to be. The GPS works really well for bike rides and, surprisingly, lap swimming. I wear it pretty much all the time and end up charging it every other day from around 30% remaining – it does charge very quickly though. I have verified the heart rate with an external SpO2 meter and the numbers agree very well.As for cons, the touch display is a bit laggy but not aggravatingly so. Also, water on the display in the shower will emulate touch events. One change I’d like to see is a night time dimmer mode, or alternatively a small time display on a black background during the “sleep hours” because in the middle of the night it seems very bright.I really like this watch – as an already active person it tracks my activity, sleep and etc. in surprising and insightful ways. It pairs with the Polar website to allow you to plot all your data and see your trends. If you are already active and are looking for a good fitness tracker, this is a good candidate.
