I don’t know how I went so long without this. I bought an echo dot and streamed music on it all the time every day. That was it’s primary purpose. I guess I bought the echo alone because I wasn’t sure if I’d like it, but I used it all the time. I decided it was time to buy a nice speaker for it. I didn’t realize how badly I needed one until this arrived and I got it set up. It’s night and day, the sound out of this is fantastic! It’s much smaller than I anticipated (about 6.5″ tall, 4.75″ wide), but it carries a powerful punch. I haven’t had to turn it up even half way yet, as it’s plenty loud, the bass is quite pounding, and the high end sounds clean and crisp. I love this speaker! On the bonus, plus side, you can stream music through it from your other music accounts (Google, Apple, Audible, Bandcamp, to name a few and not to mention whatever device you’re using as a controller), and I didn’t know this before buying it–that was a very pleasant surprise! It’s almost made my echo dot obsolete. You can control everything through Alexa on whatever device you have, but you can also use your smart phone as a controller for the Sonos, which is how I primarily use it.All in all, this is fantastic. I really like it and highly recommend it. This is one of my favorite purchases of 2018. I can’t say enough good things about it and I don’t have anything negative to say. It’s time for you to get one too!

So excited that the price has gone down on the Play:1 after they launched the new Alexa-enabled speakers. In my opinion, SONOS is still the most ideal music system for the home. We have a number of Play:1’s as well as the one that runs through legacy speakers. The software is fine – originally, I disliked it but it grows on you. The fact that it’s platform independent is nice so all the major music sources work as well as your own MP3 collection.Set-up is easy and almost anti-climatic.I prefer the ‘classic’ Play:1 to the new One-series speaker for two reasons:(1) The actual physical controls (IMHO) work better than touch sensitive ones. A few of our Play:1’s are in hard-to-reach areas where I’m often finding myself reaching up to turn up/down or pause/skip. Very easy with actual buttons to find by touch.(2) I have an Echo Dot, but I don’t think the Alexa integration is up to speed with SONOS on either the Play:1 or ONE. So, to me, integration with Alexa is by no means a priority and seems a bit half-baked at this point.

The Sonos wireless speaker system is phenomenal in its ease of use and in the quality of the sound you get from all the speakers including the smallest model. These active speakers connect to your source of music (Spotify, Apple, Google, Tidal – you name it, Sonos connects to more sources than anything else) and maintains its connection to through wifi without depending on your phone, tablet, or computer to keep it going.I bought this speaker to make a stereo pair but i have used Play 1s in a solo capacity and they are great then too.Sound is full, powerful, and authoritative. Also, these plug into wall power only and don’t necessitate speaker cable being laid throughout your home (tedious!). I’ve recommended Sonos to friends and family and they’ve all thanked me – if you’re wavering, you need not be.

I have been impressed with the Sonos system and the Play:1 speaker since receiving two as gifts a few years or so ago. Recently, we purchased two more to create a surround sound system with a Playbar and Sub.These are not tiny speakers, but they are small and relatively easy to find space for. Do not let the size fool you, though. These things punch well above their weight when it comes to sound. Just a single one delivers excellent quality when you think about what you are dealing with. I am quite picky about my sound, and I continue to be impressed by what these things produce. What I truly love is how easy they are to move around. At under five pounds, you just unplug it, move it, and plug it back in. In a few seconds, it’s ready to go. It’s particularly nice to take outside on a nice day or evening. According to Sonos, they are designed to withstand outdoor conditions. While I’ve unintentionally tested that claim a few times, I make a habit of bringing it inside when I’m done. It’s just too easy, and I cannot imagine that keeping it outside does not shorten the speaker’s lifespan in some manner.FYI, it is worth the trouble to keep all Sonos components plugged in. Whenever there is an update, all the firmware in the speakers will update automatically to those that are plugged in. If you leave a speaker unplugged when an update happen, it may not show up on your controller when you do plug it back it. The worst case is that you reset and reinstall the speaker. Neither of those processes are long or difficult, but you may as well avoid the pain.Regarding the Sonos system as a whole, it’s fantastic and continues to improve. It’s become the primary audio in our home, and I intend to purchase another Play:1 or two to place in other rooms either for grouping or for different options.

The Sonos speaker system is brilliantly executed and these Play:1s are the basic building blocks of the system. If you only had one Play:1 speaker in your home, I’m not sure it’s significantly better than other bluetooth/wi-fi speakers that could be had for much cheaper. The brilliance comes when you add another speaker to the system. Now, you’re starting to fill your home with music. The kicker is when you pair two Play:1 speakers together as L/R stereo speakers. The dimension of the sound becomes much wider. I’d take two Play:1s over the 5 or Play:3…sound separation seems better to me, and it’s still the cheapest option. Something to be aware of – the newer Sonos 1 speakers have built-in Alexa and support Airplay functionality. Other than that, the sound is identical. But, you can only pair two of the same speaker types to be used for L/R stereo.I’ve been chipping away and slowly investing in more and more Sonos speakers. These Play:1s are the best value. We have 4 in our home now, 2 of which are used as rear channels with a Sonos Beam for surround sound. The bass these things put out when watching TV is significant enough that I can’t justify spending the $700 for the dedicated sub. These are also easy to unplug and move around the house when needed.

We sell luxury homes and discovered this through one of our listings. I loved how easy it was to use from my phone and that there wasn’t any crazy installment. Also, the fact that it’s not connected/bolted to the house means (in real estate terms) that the sound system comes with us if we sell.I don’t know why others are saying you can’t use it from my laptop. I use it just fine from my phone, laptop, desktop, etc. Yes, you need the app but we’re in an app world and the app is very user friendly. I use my Spotify and Pandora accounts. It’s great for what I wanted which is background music streaming throughout the house. It took me 5 minutes to set up each speaker and was one of the easiest things I’ve ever set up. I have two now and will be purchasing more for the rest of the house.

I already have a set of play 1’s in my kitchen so I knew what to expect. You can’t get a pair of better speakers in my book. They are easy to install. My husband doesn’t like that you have to rely on your cell phone to work the system and I guess if you didn’t have a phone you could use your computer but I try and tell him think of it like a remote. And don’t let others fool you into thinking these are blue tooth enabled. It irritates me when people say that. They DO NOT use Bluetooth which actually is better. They use your WiFi so you do need WiFi for them to work. It’s better because you don’t lose sound quality. Haven’t you ever wondered why when you use Bluetooth and stream music it isn’t as crisp and loud as you want. That’s because you lose sound and noise control especially for Apple users. Because Apple puts volume control on their phones you can’t truly blast things as mich as your speakers will allow but I’m not reviewing Apple right now. If you want the best speakers and have WiFi and a phone go with Sonos you won’t regret it and everyone will comment on them and want a pair themselves. And for a truly amazing sound pay the money for the sub!

I wanted to chime in here because I can see that this little speaker is getting an undue bad rep for basically being misunderstood… Here’s the thing… If you are looking for a great Bluetooth speaker that sounds amazing and solves all of your tiny speaker needs all by itself, you are looking in the wrong place. Don’t get me wrong, the play1 sounds pretty good and it is a well made, solid little speaker, but holistically speaking Sonos’ thing is not to provide you with a little standalone bluetooth speaker. Sonos is meant to be a whole-home HIFI sound system. I would consider the play1 to be more of a component intended to work with a larger system. The play1 is not going to blow you away in a room all by itself, but if paired with another play1 and a Sonos sub and playbar for surround sound, it will sound amazing. The Sonos software, the extra components (boost, connect amp…etc.) and the necessity to have a suuuuper strong wifi signal to use all of it are only going to be worth your time if you are taking advantage of a full system. Anyone who owns just one or two play1s and is frustrated with the app and all the software updates is absolutely right, its not worth it. When, however, you are using the app to group multiple rooms and taking advantage of updates that allow you to play different media in different rooms using Alexa (just examples) the updates suddenly become less burdensome.I also touched on this a second ago, but it is important to understand that these are not intended to be Bluetooth speakers. You HAVE to use the Sonos app to play almost everything (Spotify Connect does let you play music from the Spotify app with a paid Spotify subscription – Some other services do this as well.) This, again, is because the intended use is to be able to connect multiple rooms in your home to the system and play music throughout. It makes sense that Sonos would not be able to ensure that there would be no sync delays or lag between rooms/speakers unless the Sonos system is controlling all output. An added benefit to this is that you can compile Sonos playlists that pull songs from multiple sources – have an album saved on Spotify, but can only find that live version of your favorite song on Google play? You can build a Sonos playlist that combines it all into 1 killer tracklist.Additionally, these are not computer speakers.

As music migrated to digital and I migrated into multi-room living quarters, my overall sound scenario had degraded badly. Sonos to the rescue! Incredibly easy to set up (takes just minutes from my iPhone or iPad) and easy to use (adjust sound room by room at a touch), expandable, fabulous fidelity … couldn’t be better. I’m back to loving music! Perhaps my only complaint is that the system is capable of playing so loudly, that it’s more difficult than I’d like it to be to make small volume adjustments at the lower end of the scale.

I have to admit, I am a picky person when it comes to speakers. I’ve had brands at home and in my vehicles, such as the following: JBL, Bose, Definitive Technology, Klipsch, Harman Kardon, Infinity and Polk. In relation to a portable Bluetooth speaker, I’ve had Bose, Bowers and Wilkins, and JBL. Earlier this year, I purchased a Bose Soundlink Revolve. I decided to order three of the Sonos PLAY:1 speakers. My home is pretty open concept and small, so I put one in my dining room, office and master bedroom. Setting them up and tuning them is very simple. Eager to hit play, I had already somewhat made up my mind that these wouldn’t pass my pickiness. I was VERY wrong. I am honestly speechless on how awesome the three of these sound. Truthfully, they’re the best wireless speakers that I’ve ever owned. From the packaging, superb sound quality, to the setup process; Sonos definitely put copious amounts of time and effort to make such a stellar product. When I first started looking at multi room speakers, and decided on Sonos, I knew that eventually I would need to get the Sonos sub woofer. After owning these speakers for less than 24 hours, I placed the order for the sub last night. I’m super excited to hear what it sounds like. Buy their products, you won’t be disappointed!!
