TL;dr – it works great. Treat it with respect, be prepared to toss the cable it comes with (because they fail) and enjoy a huge amount of storage for a reasonable amount of money. You’ve probably read a ton of reviews on external drives and have arrived here. I’ve been in the tech biz over 44 years and was there when 128Kbyte 8” floppy disks were considered advanced. I’ve used a LOT of different drives.Let’s put this drive into perspective: it is NOT a “portable drive”, it’s an external drive that you can choose to move from place to place. AS WITH ALL SUCH DRIVES, it contains precision moving parts; if you drop it, it will likely break. If you move it around when it’s operating, it probably won’t like it. If you drop your laptop, it will likely break. If you want an external drive that you can really move around, get an SSD.I purchased one of these drives for cloud-storage and archival purposes. Simply put, I needed somewhere to dump large data collections for essentially read-only access as well as having a buffer area for cloud storage synchronization purposes (lots of r/w access to the drive). It worked so well I purchased another and might even get a 3rd.Cloud storage is great for frequently accessed data, but for your video collection, your vast music collection or the 130GB of pictures your spouse took last month, you might want off-line storage. This is a great choice. Is it fast? Slower than an SSD but faster than many external hard drives out there. If you want speed, use the local SSD in your device or get an external SSD drive. If you don’t want that expense, this is still a great drive. In operation the drive is whisper quiet and runs slightly warm. You may have read about the “click of death”, well, yeah, it happened to me too. It won’t run on an overloaded unpowered USB hub (click, click due to lack of power). The cable it comes with is frankly troublesome and honestly you should invest in a replacement. Yup, click, click, click because the cable failed (fortunately I had another to hand, doesn’t everyone?). All that will happen with other drives too, so it’s nothing unusual. My system: Win10 Pro and Win10 Home on Lenovo, Surface Books and Surface Pro; works out of the box just fine. For those complaining that the drive doesn’t work with some backup software; that’s not the drives fault. For those complaining about the speed for gaming purposes, that’s not the drives’ fault either, you should have purchased an SSD.Yes, it will work with Onedrive; just create a junction from your Onedrive folder to the required folder in the external drive.mklink /J srcFolder destFolderSince you have a large capacity drive for large data sets, robocopy (part of Windows) will be your friend as well as mklink to create junctions from your main drive to connection points in external drives filesystems. What happens if the drive goes down? As with any other drive, you might have lost your data. The solution is to (gasp) purchase two drives and sync one with the other.Pro’s: 5TB of storage for <$100. Quiet, fast and gets the job done. It’s a disk drive, it’s not there to be exciting.Con’s: I didn’t like the cable; invest $6 on a better one. As with ALL DRIVES, you need to treat it nicely.

Got this to hook up to my Xbox One so I could store more games. Hookup was extremely simple and straightforward. Took less than ten minutes for the whole process of hooking it up and configuring it. Now I have tons of space for my games.

Thanks to Amanda who shared how to format this for a current Mac. Here is a slightly updated version of her instructions:Open Disk Utilities. From the View menu, choose “Show All Devices.”Select WD Elements on the left side of the window.Right click and choose “Erase” from the pop-up menu.Create a name and choose “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” assuming you have a current vision of OS-X.It will reformat the drive in about a minute.I followed these directions, and it was effortless. I am using this as a Time Machine backup disk. I keep it plugged into the USB hub that I connect my computer to when it is on my desk. From reviews, I see that some people have had disk failures, but I also do a cloud-based backup. But that only backs up my most recent version of each file. Time Machine gives me hourly backups for the last 24 hours, so I can recover something I’ve inadvertently overwritten.I was using an old Synology 212+ for Time Machine, but after moving, it asked me to reinstall, crashed in the process of doing that, and lost all my data. RAID is useless in that situation. I’ve thought about buying a newer, faster NAS, but that’s expensive, and decided to go this route at least for the time being. Unlike the Synology, which was accessible by WiFi, this won’t do backups when I take my laptop away from my desk, but I do my most critical work at my desk in any event.I bought this rather than the $5 cheaper, newer version because I prefer the rounded corners to sharp edges. The rough surface doesn’t seem to show fingerprints, a problem reported by users of the shiny newer version. Amazing that 4TB can fit into such a tiny form factor and be such a reasonable price. I am delighted.

I put this drive into use immediately upon receipt. The included in the package, which is quite small, is the drive itself, the connecting cable, and a rudimentary, fold-out sheet of instructions in several languages. The instructions are unnecessary, as setup is extremely simple. Connect one end of the cable to the drive and the other end of a USB port. There’s only one way to connect the cable, as you will discover. Wait a few minutes for plug and play to recognize the device and pretty soon it shows up on Windows Explorer (or, as I use it, Q-Dir, with the next consecutive drive letter assigned. Presto, about 4tb of extra space. I use a Targus AWE55US Chill Mat Cooling Stand under my laptop, and this drive fits in the void between the top and bottom of the stand and butts up against the fan. The cable is easily routed to an adjacent USB port. It’s small enough to be easily portable in a briefcase, purse, laptop bag. or the pocket of your cargo pants.

Bought for my boyfriend. The 4TB external worked great for his PS4. He said some of the memory was used for converting but he has 7x the amount of space he started with. He is very happy with this item and I will update my review if he comes across any problems.Update 2 1/2 years layer. Still running well!

SO. SO. SOOOO GLAD I finally purchased this thing. I’ve been looking to get this for my PS4 since that 500GB wasn’t cutting it anymore. I had to go through deleting games I played from time to time just to play new ones. Now, I can make the choice of letting it stay there for a while since I have the space.Set up was SUPER EASY on PS4 as it already has the settings to format it. Not only that, it was quick in the formatting process. It’s such a relief to know that I have so much extra space now. 500GB to 2TB? That’s a nice jump I’ll say.Lastly, the price is right in my range of what I was looking for. I didn’t want to go too expensive, but I knew I wanted something good. I knew about this external hard drive because of my roommate. He got it during Black Friday (I completely missed out; I regretted it) and has no issues out of it. The opportunity came for me to purchase it for myself and got it here at a nice price.Overall, I definitely recommend it!

I’ve been subscribing to an online/cloud backup company for years. This year, the annual renewal price went up significantly, causing me to look for alternative backup ideas. I knew about external hard drives but they used to be a lot more expensive; I was surprised to see how much they’ve come down in price since I last looked at them. The price of this 2TB hard drive was less than one year of the online cloud service! The company I was using backed up *everything*, but that isn’t really necessary for me. I really only need to back up my photo archive, documents, and my genealogy database. This was the perfect solution. It arrived today and it’s amazing how small it is, it could fit into a small purse or the pocket of any bag. It’s extremely simple to use, there’s no software to install, you simply plug it into your computer’s USB port and voila!; a new drive option appears. With it plugged in, you can save things to that drive, or copy and paste items using File Explorer, which is what I’m doing in order to have a spare copy of important items. I purchased the 2TB size, which gives me about 1.81TB usable space. There’s so many benefits of this for me: 1. It’s cheaper than the online backup company I was using and no more annual subscription expense, 2. It’s small enough to take places, so I can share photos and files when I visit family without trying to fit things on a thumb drive, 3. the backup company only covered a single device for the price I paid, now I can back items up to this drive from my desktop AND my laptop, 4. it can also serve as extra storage space if needed, which I realize is why most people probably buy it to begin with, and 5. The online backup software really bogged down my computer as it constantly backed up files, now that annoyance is gone.I love this thing. Zero complaints so far, it’s extremely easy to use and worth the price.

This drive is much more than I thought it would be. Plug in ready and much smaller (physically) than I thought it would be. I thought 2TB would be a wee bit smaller than I needed but it wasn’t until I did the actual math that I realized I’ll be using this for years to come. I loaded some 500 pictures onto the drive and they took up a very tiny slice of the whole drive. Pleasantly surprised to say the least. Glad I bought it and would recommend it to anyone that wants one.

Easy setup with Xbox One X. Got the 4TB version… I figure I can hold 35+ 4K HDR games between the external drive and the 1TB on the machine, which will give me a number of years of game acquisition capability, and have another USB port if I need additional expansion years down the road.

As my headline states, I bought two of these external hard drives to use as additional storage for both my PS4 and Xbox One. The setup was easy and only requires a quick format by navigating through each consoles respective settings. They are particularly handy since they do not require their own power source. It’s really too soon for me to remark about durability and drive longevity, but speaking as one who has put together several PCs from individual components, sometimes hard drives fail but this really should only be the case after several years.Just to be clear, I do not have a PS4 Pro or an Xbox One S/X, so I can’t vouch for compatibility with these consoles, although I can’t imagine there would be an issue.
