I know it’s intended use is for video games, but I’ve been using it for anything but. As a person who needs high capacity storage drives that can reliably load and unload bulk amounts of data without burning out, solid state is out of the question. Boasting a 2 TB capacity and USB 3.2 read/write speeds, this HDD has performed as good as I can ask of an HDD. It takes about an hour to transfer 780 gigs worth of data over USB 3.2, and that’s pretty great. It’s survived sharp impacts a few times and continues to perform with no bad sectors reported. It’s power usage is minimal enough that a Raspberry Pi 4 can power it 24/7 without compromising it in any way.

I bought this 5TB drive for $119.99 while regular my passport costs $129.99.First impression: very very low vibration and noise compared with a 4TB mt passport from 2018. I cannot say any about reliability but I feel confidence.

The short story is: this drive is impossible to shuck because it doesn’t have a SATA interface and the USB control board is soldered on.Follow the pictures attached for details. Opening the drive is very easy. Use a 2mm hex screwdriver on each of the four corners of the aluminum plate. Gently pry the plate up and off, there will be some resistance because it’s held in place by four gentle adhesive strips. From there, pop out the four plastic tabs which are holding the drive in the enclosure. At this point, you can effortlessly lift the drive up and out of the enclosure.Upon inspection, I found a Western Digital drive with a model number of “WD50NMZW”. The interface is USB and the control board soldered on. It’s possible the developer re-used old controller board design, because as you look to the left of the USB port, you see solder points that match a SATA port, in the location where you’d expect to find a port.In any case, I learned what I needed, put the drive back together and now it serves me as an external USB drive.update, 25 October 2020: Still using it, still works great.

I bought this hard drive to go with my new Xbox Series S. Since the standard Series S only have a few hundred gigabytes free it was necessary to purchase an external drive to go along with it.With this drive I am able to install tons of games from GamePass. Everything runs lightning fast from this drive and load times are way faster than they even were with my old Xbox and internal hard drive.

I didn’t find out why this was for Game machines and not appropriate for PCs until after I got it. PS4 needs exFAT not NTFS. And exFAT for large drive has clusters that are very large. So if you have many small files, there is MUCH wasted space. I had 2.5 TB backed up and it was using 3.5TB in space.AMAZON great for exchanges will probably wipe disk and exchange for 5TB WD portable HD (which is also a bit cheaper).BUT no complaints about the drive or Amazon delivery and return. Also it looks pretty cool with that metal case which works to dissipate heat. I haven’t actually sent it back yet, as I have a month after the replacement drive arrives, so I may just keep it and reformate it. I just thought that people might wonder what is different between this GAMING drive and the 5TB portable drive.

For the price and the simple fact that it is a “5 tb hard drive”, this is ideal for anyone who wants a lot of storage for a good price and quality! This HDD should have enough space for more than a hundred games, perhaps up to 200 hundred. The write speeds are great as well!Being a hard drive… It is best to not be rough with it, moving parts and all. I haven’t tested the durability, but it seems like it could withstand a drop or two.

One caveat is if your download is going to finish and install, my PS4 has to be on and not in rest mode. If it is in rest mode something happens where the extended storage disconnects causing the drive to need repair. It will download fine, but not install in rest. If the PS4 is fully powered on no issues. I did contact Sony and Western Digital, both were great and we ran a test that took 8 days to complete. Everything is fine and in proper working order. So when downloads get close to installing I power th PS4 on from rest mode. Easy work around.**Update**I found a fix on the Playstation consoles and peripherals forum from user DJ_MANUAL ” set ‘supply power to usb ports’ to OFF.external hdd will then turn off properly and resume when wakeeven then external hdd will not turn off when its downloading while rest mode. “This worked for me. :)Hope this helps anyone having this issue.

I’ve purchased five of the 5TB versions so far. I’ve received one bad cable, but I had a couple of extra cables so it didn’t matter. The drives themselves have been great. I’ve written at least 2TB of data to each of them without problems. I bought them because until now the biggest external USB drive you could get that didn’t require an external power supply was 2TB. Now it’s up to 5TB and I’m replacing the old ones. I’ve had good luck over the years with WD.
